  19. I would like to start off by asking that you don't get the 'Occult' mixed up
  20. with a 'Cult'. The Occult is the study of the unknown, while a Cult is a group
  21. of religious radicals.
  22.  
  23. While I take credit for typing in this file, I did not write it. I am copying 
  24. this word for word out of a book (very small) on the topic. I have used the
  25. meathods described within, and I have found that they work quite well in
  26. most instances. While some of the rules are trash, I'll let you decide which
  27. ones are or aren't........
  28.  
  29. -WHAT IS A SEANCE?
  30.  
  31.      The Seance or Spirit-Circle is the assembling together of a given number
  32. of persons for the purpose of seeking communication with the spirits who have
  33. passed away from earth into the higher world of souls. The chief advantage of
  34. such an assembly in the mutual imparation and reception of the combined 
  35. magnetisms of the assemblage. These in combination form a force stronger than
  36. that of the isolate subject:  first enabling spirits to commune with great
  37. power; next, developing latent gifts of mediumship in such members of the
  38. circle as are thus endowed; and, finally, promoting the harmonious and social
  39. spirit of fraternal intercouse which is one of the chief aims of the spirits
  40. mission.
  41.  
  42. -WHO SHOULD ATTEND A SEANCE?
  43.  
  44.      The persons who compise the circle should be, as far as possible, of 
  45. to oysters and champagne.  This little
  46. recipe depends on the amoritic virtues of vervain or Herbis
  47. Veneris when used in conjunction with fennel.  Both herbs
  48. may be combined in an infusion; or fennel water, obtainable
  49. from herbalists, may be used to prepare; but no person suffering from a decidedly chronic
  50. disease, (Like Sir Arthur's AIDS), or of a very weak physique should be present
  51. at any circle unless it is formed expressly for healing purposes. The use
  52. growing out of the association of different temperments is to form a battery on
  53. the principles of electricity or galvanism, composed of positive and negative
  54. elements, the sum of which should be unequal. No person of a very strongly
  55. positive temperment or disposition should be present, as any magnetic
  56. spheres emanating from the circle will overpower that of the spirits, who
  57. must always be positive to the circle in order to produce phenomena.
  58.  
  59. -HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN BE SEATED AT THE SEANCE TABLE?
  60.  
  61.      I would recommend the number of the circle never to be less than three
  62. nor more than twelve. Also, it is not desirable to have more than two 
  63. already well-developed mediums in a circle; Mediums always absorb the
  64. magnetism of the rest of the party; hence, when there are too many present,
  65. the force, being divided, cannot operate successfully with any.
  66.  
  67. -PROPER ROOM TEMPERATURE FOR A SEANCE.
  68.  
  69. Never let the aparrtment be overheated, or even close. As an unusual ammount
  70. of magnetism is liberated at a circle the room is always warmer than ordinary
  71. and should be very well ventilated.
  72.  
  73. -PROPER LIGHTING FOR A SEANCE.
  74.  
  75. Avoid strong light, which, by producing excessive motion in the atmosphere,
  76. disturbs the manifestations. A very subdued light is the most favorable for
  77. any manifestations of a magnetic character especially for spiritual
  78. magnetism.
  79.  
  80. -POSITIONS TO BE OBSERVED (Who should sit where?).
  81.  
  82. If the circle is one which meets periodically, and is composed of the same
  83. persons, let them occupy the same seats (unless changed under spiritual
  84. direction), and sit (as the most f an infusion of
  85. vervain.  These herbs are native to Britain, and should be
  86. gathered on a Friday, preferably during the passage of the
  87. Moon through the first ten degrees of Taurus or Virgo.  The
  88. Moon should also be well aspected with Saturn and Venus.
  89.

  93.  
  94. -WHICH ITEMS SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE SEANCE ROOM?
  95.  
  96.      If flowers & fruit are in the room, see that they are freshly gathered.
  97. Otherwise, remove them. Also avoid sitting in a room with many minerals,
  98. metals, or glasses. These all injuriously affect sensitives.
  99.  
  100. -HOW TO BEGIN THE SEANCE.
  101.  
  102.      I recommend the seance to be opened either with prayer or music, vocal
  103. or instrumental; after which, subdued quiet and harmonizing conversation is
  104. better than silence, but let the conversation always be directed toward the
  105. purpose of the gathering, and never sink into discussion, or rise to emphasis.
  106. Let it be gentle, quiet, and spiritual, until phenomena begin to manifest.
  107. Always have a slate, pen or pencil, and paper on the table so as not to be
  108. abliged to rise and procure them. Try to avoid all entering or quitting the
  109. room, moving about, irrelevant conversation or disturbances within or without
  110. the circle room, after the seance has commenced.
  111.  
  112. -THE BEST TIME TO CONDUCT A SEANCE.
  113.  
  114.      The spirits are far more punctual to seasons, faithful to promise, and
  115. periodical in action than mortals. Endeavor, then, to fix your circle at a
  116. convenient hour when you will be least interrupted and do not fail in your    
  117. appointments. Do not admit late comers. You should not be disturbed in any way
  118. after the sitting commences. Nothing but necessity, indisposition, or
  119. impressions (to be hearafter described) should warrant the least disturbance
  120. of the sitting.
  121.  
  122. -HOW LONG SHOULD A SEANCE LAST?
  123.  
  124.      A sitting should NEVER exceed two hours, unless an extention in time be
  125. solicitated by the spirits. Let the seance ALWAYS extend to one hour, even if
  126. no results are obtained. It sometimes requires all that time for spirits to
  127. form their battery of the materials furnished.
  128.  
  129. -WHY SOME SPIRIT CIRCLES MUST BE BROKEN UP.
  130.  
  131.      Since ALL circles are experimental, no one ahould be discouraged if
  132. phenomena are not produces after the first few sittings. Stay with the same 
  133. circle for six sittings. If no phenomea are then produced (provided all the
  134. conditions in the previous text are observed) you may be sure you are rightly
  135. assimilated to each other, you do not form the requisite combonations, or 
  136. neutralize each other. In that case, break up, and let that circle or members
  137. meet with other persons; that is, change one, two, or three persons of your
  138. group for others, and so on until you succeed.
  139.  
  140. -THE TEST MEDIUM.
  141.  
  142.      A well developed test-medium may sit without injury for any person,
  143. of any description of character or temperment.
  144.  
  145. -WHAT TYPES OF PEOPLE MUST BE BANNED?
  146.  
  147.      A circle sitting for mutual development should never admit persons 
  148. addicted to bad habits, criminals, sensualists, strongly positive persons of
  149. any kind, whether rude, skeptical, violent tempered, or dogmatical. A humble,
  150. candid, inquiring spirit, unprejudiced, and receptive of truth, is the only
  151. frame of mind in which to sit for phenomena, the delicate magnetism of which is
  152. shaped, tempered, and made or marred as much by mental as physical conditions.
  153.  
  154. -WHEN THE 'SPIRITS'"TAKE OVER"
  155.  
  156.      When once any of the circle can communicate freely and conclusively with
  157. the spirits, the spirits can and will take charge of and regulate the future
  158. movements of the circle.
  159.  
  160. -IMPRESSIONS: WHEN 'OTHER' SPIRITS TALK TO 'OUR' SPIRITS.
  161.  
  162.      Impressions are the voices of spirits speaking to our spirits, or else
  163. the monitions of the spirit within us, and should always be respected and
  164. followed out, unless (which is very rare) suggestive of actual wrong in act
  165. or word. At the opening of the circle, one or more members are often 
  166. impressed to change seats with others; one or more to withdraw, or a strong
  167. feeling of repulsion to some member of the circle, makes it painful to remain
  168. there. Let any or all of these impressions be faithfully reguarded, and, at
  169. commencing, pledge to each other the promise that no offence shall be taken by
  170. following out impressions. If a strong impression to write, speak, sing, dance,
  171. or gesticulate, possess any mind present, follow it out faithfully. It has a 
  172. meaning, if you cannot at first realize it. Never feel hurt in your own person,
  173. or riducule in your neighbors, for any failures to express, or at first
  174. discover the meaning of the spirit impressing you.
  175.  
  176. -SPIRIT CONTROL
  177.  
  178.      Spirit control is often deficient, and at first almost always imperfect,
  179. but by often yielding to it, your organism becomes more flexible, and the
  180. spirit more experienced; and practice in control is absolutely necessary for
  181. spirits as well as mortals. If dark and evil-disposed manifest to you, never
  182. drive them away, but always strive to elevate them, and treat them as you would
  183. mortals in similar circumstances. Do not always attribute falsehoods to lying 
  184. spirits or decieving mediums. Many mistakes occur in the communion of which you
  185. cannot always be aware.
  186.  
  187. -STRIVING FOR TRUTH
  188.  
  189.      Strive in truth, but rebuke error gently; and do not always attribute it 
  190. to design, but rather to mistake in so difficult and experimental a stage of 
  191. the communion as mortals at present enjoy with the spirits. All persons are
  192. subject to spirit influence and spirit guidence and control, but not all can so
  193. externalize this power as to use it consciously or be what is significantly
  194. called a medium. And finally, let it be remembered that except in the case of 
  195. trance-speakers, no medium can ever hope successfully to exercise his/her gift
  196. in a large or promiscuous assembly, whil trance-speakers, no less than mediums
  197. for any other gift, can never be influenced by spirits far beyond their own
  198. normal capacity in the matter of the intelligence rendered. The magnetism of
  199. the spirit and the spirit-circle being but a quickening fire, which inspires,
  200. the brain, stimulates the facilities, and, like a hot-house process on plants,
  201. forces in abnormal prominence dormant or latent powers of the mind, but creates
  202. nothing. Even in the case of merely automatic speakers, writers, and other
  203. forms of test mediums, the intelligence or idea of the spirit is always
  204. measurably shaped by the capacity idiosyncracies of the medium. All spirit
  205. power is thus limited to expression by organism through which it works; and
  206. spirits may control, inspire, and influence the human mind, but do not change
  207. or re-create it.
  208.  
  209. -SOME FINAL ADVICE.
  210.  
  211.      Unless strictly charged by spirits to do otherwise, DO NOT continue to
  212. hold sittings with the same parties for more than a twelve month period. After
  213. that time, if not before, fresh elements of magnetism are absolutely essential.
  214. Some of the original circle should withdraw and others take their place. This 
  215. is a most important point, and one NOT to be forgotten!
